The Institution of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) is Tanzania’s oldest and most prestigious state university. It is located 13 kilometers west of Dar es Salaam, on the 1,625-acre observation hill known as Mlimani in Kiswahili. It began as the University College Dar es Salaam (UCD), an affiliate college of the University of London, on October 25, 1961.
It was briefly housed in the offices of the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) on Lumumba Street in Dar es Salaam from its inception until 1964, when it was relocated to its permanent site on the Hill.It started with only one faculty, the Faculty of Law, and 13 students, one of whom was a woman, Julie Manning.
It joined the University of East Africa in 1963, along with Makerere University College in Uganda and Nairobi University College in Kenya, as a constituent college. Act No. 12 of 1970 established UDSM as a full-fledged university on July 1, 1970.
